Sand Blasting
Sand blasting is a method of frosting glass / obscuring glass. Frosted glass / obscured
glass maintains or increases privacy, whilst still allowing light to transmit /
circulate through windows, decorative glass doors, glass partitions and glass screens.
Sand blasting is also appropriate for reproducing lettering, logos and decorative
patterns on company signs.
Sand blasting involves pressure spraying aluminium oxide over the surface of the
glass, marble or granite. The design is created by masking off areas with a protective
film, whilst blasting the unprotected areas. The depth and degree of translucency
of the frosted glass / obscured glass can be varied according to the degree of force
and type of sand used. Sand blasting is a flexible technique and a fine to a deep
3D effect can be achieved in the frosted glass / obscured glass in line with your
requirements. The effects of sand blasting are permanent and will not be damaged
by cleaning the frosted glass / obscured glass.
Acid Etching
Acid etching is a highly specialised technique, no
longer widely available, for creating a frosted pattern / obscured pattern on glass.
Acid etching is time consuming and therefore more
expensive but etched glass offers greater versatility than sand blasting.
Acid etching creates a more refined pattern in the glass with a distinctive
satin like appearance, a wider variety of finishes and increased degrees of transparency.
As with sand blasted frosted glass / obscured glass, the effects of
acid etching are permanent and etched glass will not be damaged by cleaning.
Commonly used to recreate traditional pub windows and for listed building decorative
glass,
acid etching is also regularly utilised by
banks, building societies and high street names to create etched glass logos as
part of the corporate identity.
Gilding
Gilding is the application of loose leaf gold to the back / underside of decorative
glass for an elegant effect. By working on the back of the decorative glass the
gold is protected and the patterned glass can be safely cleaned, yet its lustre
is fully utilised and preserved for stunning impact.
Painting
Colours from across the spectrum can be applied when sand blasting glass, for a
permanent stunning appearance on frosted glass / obscured glass which will not be
damaged by cleaning. Yorkshire Decorative Glass will paint windows, glass doors,
glass partitions, glass screens and glass splash backs in the shade you require.
The technique is commonly used for lettering, logos and decorative patterns on company
glass signs.
Vinyl
Yorkshire Decorative Glass supplies pre-spaced lettering, logos, emblems and graphics
on self adhesive rolls. The design can be simply applied onto the required glass
or metal surface. This includes office windows, along with company cars and vans,
for low cost publicity. The computer generated designs offer a vast range of sizes,
colours and fonts – the possibilities are endless! Vinyl self adhesive designs from
Yorkshire Decorative Glass are a cost effective, durable and practical alternative
to traditional decorative glass techniques, with the added advantage of being fully
removable.
Ritec Clearshield
Ritec Clearshield is a protective coating which can be applied to clear or frosted
glass / obscured glass, to make cleaning and maintenance easier, especially in commercial
settings. With Ritec Clearshield, the visibility of greasy finger marks on decorative
glass and patterned glass will be virtually eliminated! An anti bacterial protective
coating will also be available in the near future.
